With SCG CON Portland wrapping up this past weekend, the efforts of local community groups are helping Sorcery’s impact extend well beyond the realm.
In the lead-up to the weekend, members of Beasts of the Bay were already thinking about what it means to gather around the game they love. The focus was not on standings or placement, but on the sense of togetherness that Sorcery so often inspires when players come together with intention.
Fresh off their annual Beasts of the Bay toy drive, the group was already reflecting on how play could turn into something more. Looking for ways to amplify their powers for good, Neil from Beasts of the Bay reached out to the Rose City Sorcery crew with a simple and very Sorcery question: what if we built something together?
What followed was a fully off-site charity event, co-hosted by two communities and united as the “West Coast Dragons.” The goal was not just to enjoy Sorcery during the SCG CON weekend, but to use the game as a gathering point for generosity, connection, and shared purpose.
Supporting a Cause Close to Home
For this event, the group chose to raise funds for Birch Community Services, an organization that has supported Oregon families since 1992. Birch focuses on food distribution for families in immediate need, alongside financial education and counseling that help build long-term stability.
All proceeds from the event were donated directly to Birch Community Services, ensuring that every entry, raffle ticket, and contribution went toward supporting local families in need.
Jeremy Chien of the Beasts of the Bay shares, “We chose to raise funds for this non-profit because of their commitment to our local communities and ability to handle the logistics of getting resources where they are needed most.”
For the organizers, supporting Birch felt like a natural extension of Sorcery’s values: helping neighbors, strengthening communities, and leaving places better than we found them.
A Model of What Sorcery Can Be
Sorcery thrives anywhere people gather with intention, whether that’s around a kitchen table, at a local game store, or, in this case, packed into a pub with fellow sorcerers who care as much about one another as they do about the cards in their decks.
With over 40 participants in attendance, three Sorcery artists joining the celebration, and $3,000 raised for charity, the event stood as a clear example of what the Sorcery community can create when it comes together with generosity and purpose.

Gratitude Where It’s Due
At Erik’s Curiosa, we are honored to see communities like Beasts of the Bay and Rose City Sorcery leading by example. Their willingness to welcome new faces, collaborate across communities, and turn play into positive impact is a powerful reminder of how player-led communities can use games as a force for good.
Special thanks to:
- Neil and the Beasts of the Bay team for logistics, coordination, and continued leadership through charitable play
- Sam, Kevin, and Stew from Rose City Sorcery for venue coordination, prizing, and local support
- The participating Sorcery artists for sharing their time and presence with the community
- And every player who showed up, donated, and helped turn a weekend of play into meaningful support for others
In moments like this, Sorcery shows what it can be at its best: a table where everyone is welcome, and where the magic extends far beyond the game itself. Thank you to all the Sorcerers who help keep the spirit of Sorcery alive, both within the realm and beyond it!
