Heidi Taillefer

Heidi Taillefer is a 21st-century surrealist and symbolist based in Montreal, Quebec. She began her career as a commercial illustrator in the mid-1990s and later pursued fine art alongside her illustration work. Her distinctive painting style has earned her contracts with clients such as Cirque du Soleil, Infiniti luxury automobiles, the NFL, and Forbes magazine.

In 2020, Taillefer won the Traditional Art Award in the international Beautiful Bizarre Art contest, and her work has been featured in magazines like Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose. Her art is collected internationally and exhibited in museums and galleries across Europe and North America.

Taillefer's work is characterized by her exploration of the growing hybridization of technology and humanity, often depicting "machine-like" constructions. Her approach infuses primordial aspects of the human condition into these hybridized depictions, reminding viewers of our inescapable nature despite our increasing merger with technology.

Preferred Medium

I began painting with watercolor at age 8, moved to acrylics in my early 20s for their vibrant colors, and now primarily work in oils. I love the versatility of oils and the traditional feel of the medium; plus, the smell of linseed oil in the studio is divine. One technique I particularly enjoy with oils is glazing, where I brush a transparent or translucent color over another layer to create a stained glass effect and enhance luminosity.

Notable Achievements

In 2020, I won the Traditional Art Award at the International Beautiful Bizarre contest in Australia. In 2018, I received Best in Show (juried by Ron English) at the Surreal Salon in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Over the last decade, my work has been featured in international art magazines such as Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, and Beautiful Bizarre. I painted two art cars for Infiniti Canada and Taiwan in 2009 and 2010, illustrated the Cirque du Soleil show poster for Dralion in 1999, and had my first museum exhibition at the McAllen International Museum of Art and Science in 1997.
