Atlas Thorn

Atlas is an oil painter specializing in vibrant fantasy worlds. Residing in Australia’s Blue Mountains, he draws inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape. His work is characterized by vivid imagery and optimistic themes, inviting viewers into immersive, narrative-driven spaces. Atlas’s skillful use of light adds depth and emotion to his paintings, with each piece functioning as a self-contained story.

After transitioning from the animation industry to independent artistry in 2017, Atlas has exhibited his work at numerous Australian exhibitions and conventions. He continues to explore the interplay between the natural world and fantastical imaginings, pushing the boundaries of his creative vision. He believes that art should evoke emotion and inspire curiosity, hoping his paintings encourage viewers to engage with the world around them with that same sense of wonder and optimism.

Atlas works with oil paint, drawn to its rich, buttery texture, exceptional blending capabilities, and vibrancy. Beyond its aesthetic qualities, his artistic practice is deeply rooted in ethical and sustainable principles. He exclusively uses cruelty-free and environmentally friendly paints, mediums, and tools to minimize his environmental footprint.

A strong advocate for material reuse, Atlas incorporates reclaimed frames and transforms discarded objects into unique canvases, giving them a second life. This commitment to sustainability led him to discover the art of trading card alterations, or alters, which introduced him to the captivating universe and community of the trading card game Sorcery. This unique intersection of gaming and art has allowed him to connect with both art enthusiasts and fellow gamers, enriching his creative practice. Through this medium, he not only expands his artistic reach but also fosters a deeper connection with the communities that inspire his work.

Favorite Pieces

I recently undertook a commission to reimagine three iconic Sorcery sites: Dark Tower, Gothic Tower, and Lone Tower, each representing a different real-world continent. My goal was to weave elements of these continents into the established fantasy world that Sorcery artists before me have helped shape, ensuring the pieces felt both connected and distinct.

To achieve visual unity, I employed a consistent color palette, using sunset hues of vibrant oranges and muted purples across all three.

Lone Tower, representing the Americas, features ancient Mesoamerican-inspired architecture, lending an awe-inspiring, timeworn quality to its vast, forested landscape.

Gothic Tower, for Europe, was always going to draw inspiration from Big Ben, but by incorporating influences from the Alps, continental castles, and aqueducts, I created a secluded and foreboding forest retreat.

Dark Tower, reflecting several Asian countries and their neighbors, blends elements of Japan, China, and Singapore while incorporating the arid deserts and red rock formations of my home country, Australia. The result is a piece that feels particularly mysterious and brooding.

I’m pleased with how the series maintains a cohesive aesthetic while allowing each painting to express its unique personality and real-world inspiration.
