Archimago is the new criminal in town and Persecutor is here to arrest him.
This deck was created to handle the Archimago threat. You've got many tools to deal with him.
- Free movement - getting on top of him means he can't use Craterize/Major Explosion without dealing damage to himself.
- Hate sites - fire/water is in my opinion the ideal colour pairing for hate sites against archimago. You've got all the good stuff; on-colour Mismanaged Mortuary to lock him out of his graveyard without sacrificing threshold, River of Blood to reduce the effectiveness of healing, Garden of Eden to stop card draw from Gift of the Wolf and Omphali, and of course I've also included Bureau of Occult Control even though it's off-colour. Unfortunately the deck is very threshold hungry, so we cannot afford both Bureau and Haystacks. We have the option of including Funeral Pyres as well, but in my experience against Archimago even if he's running the full site destruction package you've already got enough hate to slow him down enough without the Pyres.
- Water naturally counters burrowing effects so your minions will be safe if you park them one of these.
- Many ways of dealing with Root Spiders including Lava Flow, Begone!, The Great Famine, Balor of the Evil Eye, Atlantean Fate and in the site base with Floodplain.
- Resilient minions with Ward and the Failed Mutation really shines as both being immune to Magics and an evil minion you can step towards - just be careful of Gargantulas.
- Order of the Sacred Oak provides site protection against Sink Hole. Unfortunately it doesn't protect you from Heirloom Lost.
Magics
You're Persecutor; you want to be near the enemy and the enemy's minions. Lava Flow, Firebreathing, Poison Nova and Pollimorph all shine in this situation.
Card combinations
Plague of Frogs
The deck includes some fun combos with Plague of Frogs:
- Plague of Frogs + Sir Agravaine
- Plague of Frogs + Boudicca
- Plague of Frogs + The Rack
- Plague of Frogs + Ruler of Thul
All of these cards are great on their own so you don't need Plague of Frogs to make them work, they just overperform when paired with Plague of Frogs.
Ruler of Thul/Polar Explorers + Persecutor
If you position correctly, you can use your Persecutor passive ability to step directly onto his back row if you have Ruler of Thul/Polar Explorers and an evil minion in play.
Peacemaker Arbalast + Persecutor
Not really a combo, but when you equip Persecutor with Peacemaker Arbalast he will automatically receive +2 power when targeting enemy avatars because they are inherently spellcasters and you can just brand them evil every turn. There's also a good chance they will be carrying an artifact, increasing the buff to +3 power, so you'll often be shooting 5 damage projectiles at them every turn for a serious clock. If you draw 2x Peacemaker Arbalast the second copy isn't useless because it will still provide a power increase.
Build your own Gargantula
If you have River Rapids or Innsmouth Dock in the right position you can throw down a Hyperparasite and immediately disable one of their minions. Also works with Lord of Lies to kill minions with 5 power or less.
Weaknesses
The deck has a number of weaknesses most of which are not really relevant vs. Archimago, but are very relevant in other matchups. Overall I think the deck can beat any other deck, but some matchups will be difficult if they exploit one or more of its weaknesses.
- Lack of card draw - we play Morgana le Fay, but that's it for card draw. You'll be running out of gas quickly if you play your cards wrong against avatars like Sorcerer or decks with a lot of card draw unless you draw Garden of Eden. Every turn you will have to consider if drawing more sites is really necessary. A lot of the time you will be fine to stop at 5 sites unless you draw one of your 6-drops.
- Threshold hungry - cards like Mesmerism and Morgana le Fay can sometimes be not be played when you really want to. You'll need to carefully consider your mulligans and when to draw sites.
- Artifact destruction - the colour pair does not have a lot of artifact desctruction, so you're pretty much limited to Swap, Atlantean Fate and Just a Rock in the collection.
- Healing - we play River of Blood and not really any healing, so when the opponent has an aggressive start, the deck can sometime struggle.
- Saint of Redemption - this card ruins your whole deck. Pray the opponent isn't playing it and if they do, you need to prioritize getting rid of it.
- Low evil minion count - the deck does not have that many evil minions overall, so you'll have to prioritize them when mulliganing. Sometimes your opponent just plays evil minions and this isn't a problem, but if you draw 12 cards without seeing an evil minion on either side, you'll have a hard time executing your game plan. The 3 peculiar ports are in the site base to help mitigate this problem.
