Howdy folks!
Been a while since I did a good ol' by golly primer.
With the rise in Archi's popularity, I wanted to extend an olive branch to combat the mage overlord. Full candor, as you can see, this is a water list, which I KNOW IS SOMETHING THAT WE ARE ALL TIRED OF TOO, but is a cute little take on a steam list that I have had some good luck with! (so cute so fun).
So get this, we take hot springs, we add an anti-disable tech to combat Gargantula and Root Spider, and BOOM, you have an anti-archi list that has the burst damage, graveyard hate AND bury protection needed to take on Archi, while not completely sacrificing it's gameplan into the rest of the field.
To get into the list:
The minion package looks similar to my previous pre-Gothic Hot Springs List used to win Gen Con 2025, but with some inclusions from the new roster of strong fire and water minions that serve important roles in tackling this evolving meta.
Some key inclusions are:
Polar Explorers: 100% an all-star in this list (like with Hot Springs). The ability to play units away from Archi's Nova is imperative to not getting 2 or 3 for 1's and losing all momentum. Also circumvents Gnome Hollows, as many of our units are 3 power; Gnome Hollows can be a serious blockade against us.
Redmane Hyena: Because we are running a few demons, we can trigger this as an above-rate minion, but mostly this is in here as an anti-Archi/ Imposter tech.
Coy Nixi: We're in water, and though Thin Ice isn't especially strong against Token Archimago, Thin Ice + Coy Nixie is one of the most oppressive things possible against a minion-based deck. Also, Coy Nixie's combo potential with Druid's aura is a very real combo. Lastly, being able to force the archi closer to you makes their Major Explosions and Craterizes feel WAY more awkward.
The Ward Minions (Stagg and Order of the Sacred Oak): May Archi Decks rely on targeted or burst damage as removal. These units (to no surprise), when placed on top of a water site, typically live long enough to get some value, push damage.
Failed Mutation: One of the strongest cards in the control matchup, and will force awkward Earthquakes or Cave In's from your opponents to deal with this guy. (WHY DID EC GIVE THIS TO WATER?)
Balor of the Evil Eye: Kills spider, big dummy, DD finisher, Deamon for Hyena Target.
The Magics:
The main standout card is Onslaught: This is the ENTIRE reason we have any Earth sites in our Atlas. This card is one of the strongest magics printed in Gothic, especially against Archi and decks relying on Root Spider to lock down lanes. This enables turns like Flip for Bruin, Play Polar Exploreres, Onslaught Attack backward with Polar and Bruin for 8 regardless if they have pebble paths on their side.
Ironically, I am considering taking OUT Garden of Eden and putting in Morgana and Pact. Garden doesn't /really/ affect Archi as much as I'd like, and the draw from those two cards can be huge.
One other consideration is Bone Yard + Bureau of Occult Control (because it's both a cool combo and tech into archi), but those sites are both colorless in a triple-color deck feels too scary.
I bet you're asking, "Why no tri site?" Given the earthquake's existence, I have removed tri-sites from all my lists. I think there are enough viable ways to get threshold when necessary, and I think they are too much of a liability.
6/12: I am considering taking the earth out for a more consistent atlas.
