"Cry Me a River" is a Seer deck that just so happens to have Waveshaper at the helm. We are running 12 rivers for their scry ability, and 2 for their movement abilities. This is a midrange deck through and through. We want to start by building up our back row with rivers and picking our next spells. This is not an aggressive deck, we want to submerge as many minions as possible on curve, while forcing our opponent to come to us.
I built this deck with a budget in mind, so we are trying to avoid all the splashy water Uniques and Elites that dominate decks like Dank Magic. In it's current build, it comes in at under $100. Cutting , , and would bring the deck under $50. You could easily replace those 3 uniques with any combination of the following: 3 , 3 , another , , and another .
The all star of this deck is , allowing our submerged minions to deal damage to the subsurface with little to no opposition. Since Putrid Presence is a Unique, we don't want to rely on that as our main strategy. Our Avatar lets us slowly flood the realm and get our submerged minions into position. is an All-Star in this deck, and will draw a lot of our opponents removal. can go wherever it wants in the subsurface, and can hang out under their homesite from turn one (leave it there as long as possible, for maximum head games with your opponent). lets us easily flood our opponents half of the realm starting on turn 3, ideally. and are here because of course they are. I like them in the deck, but they are behaving like decoys in a meta dominated by Dank Magic.
This deck does not deal well with cards like , so maybe don't bring this deck to the top tables that are speccing for Dank Magic. However, our strategy of filling our back row first and then building up the outer columns really forces aggro to come right at us. Those decks are fairly obvious though, and we can easily move our Waveshaper around on the back row to valiantly run away. (Brave Sir Robin!!)
This deck wins through slow, grindy attrition. We don't have a ton of big splashy creatures. We do have amazing spellbook manipulation though, so you can dig through your deck to find what you need. lets us draw what we put on the bottom, offering us even more card selection. Remember that a Mermaids in the opening hand means you have access on turn 3 to what you mulligan away, so remember to put your most important spell, that one you don't want in your opening hand, but maybe you want to drop turn 4. those 5+ drops? yeah bottom those from your opening hand, keep your spells on top from the river scrys and then drop your mermaids turn 3 and draw back your big boy.
I am considering cutting the for . Having a submerged lethal minion on my back row seems like a nice deterrent for aggro decks. may seem like an odd inclusion but she is a BEAST! Surfacing to attack for 2 with a feels incredible if she is nearby the enemy avatar. 2 damage and 2 instant mana? Yes please! is a card I desperately want to make work, I know that I need to add 3 to the deck to really utilize the to her utmost potential, but I only own 3 in paper and they're in a different deck. So I am considering cutting the 3 Witches for 2 more Pufferfishes and another Dredge.
All of my Magics are designed to simply control the board more easily. is amazing in Waveshaper for obvious reasons. lets me surface minions without moving them so I can deliver a killing blow to an Avatar slightly out of range. after activating my avatar can ruin a big turn from the opponent. Same idea with (I just need to get one more in paper).
My sites include 14 rivers. Autumn, Spring, Summer, and River Rapids. I am considering adding 4 as well, but I currently only own 1. And that will make this deck decidedly not "budget". Is just a free minion in this deck, we are DEFINITELY getting to 8 threshold with this deck.
This is a work in progress but I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the deck. It is very fun to play, especially if you like confusing your opponent!!
