Consistency. Most Avatars, whether they go Aggro, Control, or Midrange, want as must consistency as they can get. What does Spellslinger have, then, in comparison? A singular extra spell at the start of the game.
So how do we utilize that extra card? Well, it's simple, really! By having minions that either provide so much value it hurts and are difficult to remove, and having consistent removal to get rid of multiple units at once, that one extra card can mean the difference between surviving an extra turn or dying. Repeatable value is key.
With cards like Wall of Fire to halt most movement, Nelly to provide constant removal, Kobolds to shred through smaller units, and 3 Poison Novas to deal with the rest, what do you even do against a deck like this?
Most people would look at the insane threshold requirements and deem this deck to be unplayable. Well I say to them this: just like in every card game, just a little luck goes a LONG way.
