This deck is an exercise in deck building for me. The idea is simple; I can only play Exceptionals and Ordinaries, and if I play one, I must play the maximum amount allowed. For example, if I wanted to play Dispel, I’d have to run 4. The only exception is the 3 towers in the Atlas… but I might find 3 Exceptionals that fit the bill and replace them…
The deck is pretty standard Earth/Air Sorcerer.
I’d run this deck as an unsleeved nonfoil fun house, but my aversion to shuffling unsleeved trading cards is too great. The good news is, that if you’re a beginner and looking to get into the game, this might be the perfect “precon” as there are no cards in this deck above $3.50ish as far as I’m aware.
”Nonstandard” includements:
Band of Thieves: It’s a 3 mana Stealth minion. I don’t have much to complain about with it, but maybe I’ll swap it out eventually. I’d need to find something to take its slot…
Vanishment: Give ALL allies stealth? Draw a spell? The only thing that could make this better is if the card gave you a back rub when you cast it. It’s in testing, but in draft and other decks, it sets you up for an alpha strike like no other card. Hunter’s Lodge and Watchtower seem painful, but it’ll still draw a spell.
Blink: It’s standard, but not usually as a 4 of. It draws the card, it repositions the Pudge/Phalanx.
Common Sense: Standard, but not as a 4 of in a deck littered with Ordinaries. It’ll get me anything I want.
Notable exclusions but cards I’m willing to test:
Town: 3 Mana Pudge, 2 mana Unicorn, 3 mana Phalanx, etc, are cool, but the deck has a slightly greedy mana base for the first few turns, so it may not work like I want it to. I’ll probably eat my words here and put it in to great effect in the next iteration.
Magic Missiles: Impenetrable Copse probably will tick up in use as the meta ages. If it doesn’t, I might run this.
Apprentice Wizard/Sisters of Avalon/Land Surveyor: I don’t need Deathspeaker fuel, but maybe I didn’t already give myself enough card draw.
White Knight: Eh, it’s probably not going to be less than a 5 drop and 3 attack / 5 defense is neither under- or over- whelming at 3 mana.
Phase Assassin: Honestly, this will probably slot in over Band of Thieves and I’ll swap Vanishment for Magic Missiles or another good Ordinary if I do that. It’s 50/50 deck size / I don’t think a Phase Assassin intrinsically gets more value on average than a Band of Thieves…
Highland Clansmen: I don’t want the game to get to the point where I have 7 mana, and my self imposed restriction would make me run 4. However, I don’t hate this idea, and if I go more Hamlet / Ordinaries, I will heftily consider it.
