When it comes to sharing the magic of Sorcery: Contested Realm, Jens and Sofie - better known as the duo behind the YouTube channel Cardboard Guide - have become beloved fixtures in the community. Known for their blend of informative, educational, and entertaining content, the pair has carved out a space where their shared passions come together.
We recently caught up with Jens and Sofie to learn more about their journey as creators and their love for Sorcery. Their recent gameplay video not only showcases Sorcery’s depth, but also shines a light on how much fun the community can have diving into the cards, mechanics, and storytelling experience together - even with just a simple two iPhone camera setup!
From Inspiration to Gameplay
Jens and Sofie’s journey with Sorcery began during the Kickstarter launch. Like many others, they were captivated by the game’s stunning hand-painted art, but what truly drew them in was the opportunity to document the game from its very beginning.
“The art hooked me instantly,’ Sofie recalls. ‘ The release cadence fit perfectly with our life - kids, full-time jobs, and other hobbies. Plus, the grid mechanic turned out to be one of our favorite parts of the game!”
For Jens, it was the unique blend of tactical depth and narrative immersion that sealed the deal. “It feels like you’re building a world and telling a story with your deck,” he shares. “The grid adds this spatial element that’s not unlike a miniatures game, making every move feel meaningful.”
Their decision to create content was also fueled by their desire to foster community. With their approachable style and deep passion for the game, they’ve succeeded in creating a channel that brings players from all walks of life together.
Recent Gameplay: Sacrifices, Faeries, and Fun
In their first in-person gameplay video on the channel, Jens and Sofie set out to showcase two distinct decks that highlight the versatility of Sorcery. Jens piloted a Mortal/Spirit deck built around sacrifice mechanics, turning Foot soldiers into fuel for Werewolves. “It’s a really fun deck that can overrun opponents,” Jens explains.
Meanwhile, Sofie played a Faerie-focused deck centered around the Witch Avatar, taking advantage of new cards from Arthurian Legends to swarm the board with small, but flavorful creatures. “The deck’s still a work in progress,” Sofie admits, “ but I love experimenting with new archetypes - even if it means stepping out of my comfort zone!”

Community and Connection
For Jens and Sofie, the community has been at the heart of their Sorcery journey. From meaningful conversations with fans to hosting some of the first European tournaments, they’ve built lasting friendships along the way.
“Meeting Josh from Sorcery Gambler’s Club and hosting him and his family in Denmark was incredible,” Sofie shares. “And arranging our first tournament with Jürgen from Nerd and Proud of It and Heiner from the White Rabbit Community Game Store was another highlight. The energy of that event was amazing.”
What’s Next from Cardboard Guide?
Looking ahead, Jens and Sofie plan to continue creating gameplay videos, in-depth guides, and more engaging content for their audience. “The community’s support has been everything,” they share. “We’re excited to keep improving our content and diving deeper into Sorcery as it evolves.”
