Franck Pawlowski is a fantasy illustrator whose work is inspired by a lifelong love of imaginative worlds. Drawn to the fantasy of The Lord of the Rings films, manga, and classic fantasy literature from an early age, he began drawing and painting as a child, developing a visual style that continues to evolve today.
After earning a degree in animation at ECV Lille in France, Pawlowski decided to pursue illustration as a career. He began working on 3D miniature models for a printing company while also creating digital sketches for a historical YouTube and Patreon project. These early experiences helped shape his technical foundation before he returned to painting full-time.
Today, Pawlowski focuses on creating richly detailed fantasy illustrations that blend atmosphere, storytelling, and a sense of wonder. With every new painting, he continues to refine his craft, finding fresh inspiration and enjoyment in the creative process. His work reflects the same spirit of adventure and imagination that first inspired him to pick up a pencil as a child.
Artist’s Process
Pawlowski primarily works in acrylics, and every Sorcery illustration he has created has been painted using the medium. While he experimented with watercolor, gouache, and digital painting early in his artistic journey, acrylics ultimately became his medium of choice.
His appreciation for acrylic painting came after discovering the glazing techniques of acclaimed fantasy artist Jesper Ejsing. Until then, he had been taught to treat acrylics as a heavy, opaque medium. Learning to apply thin, transparent layers transformed his approach, allowing him to slowly build depth, atmosphere, and color with each successive glaze.
Today, Pawlowski enjoys the deliberate rhythm of layering paint, taking advantage of acrylics’ permanence once dry. Because each layer remains stable beneath the next, he can continue refining a piece without disturbing the work underneath; a process that has become central to the rich, painterly quality of his fantasy illustrations.
