Brian Smith was born into a creative family where art became an early and enduring passion. Growing up during the 1970s and ‘80s, he was influenced by a wide range of visual art, including classical paintings of old masters, the surrealism movement, as well as imagery found on album covers, book illustrations, and graphic illustrations. This eclectic mix left an indelible mark on his artistic sensibilities.
Today, Brian Smith continues to channel his early influences and personal vision into his artistry, with work that depicts an otherworldly universe of ominous landscapes and haunting figures. His distinctive style resonates with those who appreciate art that transcends traditional boundaries, inviting viewers to delve into realms where imagination and reality intertwine to provoke thought and evoke emotion.

Oil paint on wood panel. To create depth and transparency I sometimes like to paint in thin, translucent layers, and oil paint is perfect for that. The Color Out of Space is a good example of a painting with that kind of effect. I also like the reflective surface of a smooth wood panel, which further adds to the illusion.
Before creating paintings for Sorcery, I exhibited in fine art galleries in Los Angeles.
“The Colour Out of Space” was an experimental, accidental painting that looks like nothing I had ever seen before, or have been able to re-create since. “Immolation” was darker conceptually than anything I’ve ever tried to paint, but I was satisfied that I captured the mood. The Beta “Death Dealer” has to be my personal favorite so far. I enjoy the power and simplicity of that one.
